I parent will often tell me, “My child’s school wants me to have him tested for ADHD. He has a hard time sitting still in class and often bothers the other children. But I have a hard time believing that he has ADHD. He doesn’t seem hyper or overactive to me. He seems like a normal, healthy boy who likes to ride his bike and play basketball!”
When this conversation occurs, I immediately begin to ask the parent two paths of questioning. Firstly, does your son enjoy building things? Does he like art? Is he the one in the family that can remember all the family vacations with an incredible photographic memory? Does he ever pick up a book and read it himself? What is his reaction to homework? I ask this, because quite often, children who are dyslexic are incredible builders, artists and family historians who do not enjoy reading or school. These kids will do anything not to have to read, write or spell in class. They are frustrated and do not have the skills to communicate that they are struggling. Therefore, they often become distracted and fidgety in class. This is a classic example of a child that is struggling with reading and a good guide to have your child tested.
I am currently based in beautiful Revelstoke BC and accepting new students. Please email me at dianewillsreading@gmail.com Or call 1-(406) 570-3780 . Parents are incredibly intuitive about their children. If you feel that your child is wrongly labeled as having ADHD, we can discuss your child’s behaviors and options.
